Background of district administration

The area with which the former Bakerganj district was formed was formerly known by different names at different times. Most of the land area of ​​the district consisted of forests, char areas and rivers. This region was once known as Bakla. By the fourteenth century, the region became famous as Chandradwip. The capital of the Chandradwip kingdom was later Madhabpasha. This capital was located only 8 miles away from Barisal city.

The origin of the name Bakerganj is named after Aga Baker, one of the officials of the Mughal administration of Dhaka in the first half of the eighteenth century. Aga Bak's elder brother was the zamindar of Umedpur Pargana. Located in the center of the district, this pargana was the largest. Besides, he was also a waddadar of Selimabad pargana of Aga Bak. The headquarters of this pargana was Bakerganj. In time, a prosperous trading center developed in this place. Later, when the district was formed under the Collector during the British rule, the district headquarters was in this town for some time.

In 1765, the East India Company acquired the ownership of the district from the Mughal emperor as a civil grant. At the time of the permanent settlement, the district was part of Dhaka under a separate commissioner. The post of commissioner was abolished in 1797 and a district was formed under the Dhaka Collector for proper administration by appointing an independent judge and magistrate for the area.

Its headquarters is located at Bakerganj. In 1801 the district headquarters was shifted to Barishal. In 1806 the district was demarcated with Jessore district. To the west of Bakerganj are the Baleshwar River, the Jhinjhinia Canal and the adjoining Gopalganj-Moksedpur Road, which mark the boundary between the two districts. In 1806 Gournadi Thana was transferred from Dhaka-Jamalpur to this district. In 1811, part of Hatia Island came under Chittagong.

After the appointment of an independent collector for the district in 1817, Bakerganj became the first full-fledged district under British rule. At that time the district included part of the present Khulna district and almost the entire Madaripur subdivision of Faridpur district. Later, Bhola Island was separated from Bakerganj in 1822 and annexed to Noakhali district. But again in 1869 Bhola came under Bakerganj district.

Later, due to important administrative changes from upazila to district level, the former Bakerganj district was divided and Barishal, Pirojpur, Jhalokati, Patuakhali, Barguna and Bhola emerged as new districts.
