Medical College
Located on the banks of the river Kirtankhola in the south-east of Barishal city, it is one of the leading medical colleges in the country. Although the foundation stone of Barishal Medical College was laid in 1964, its activities started in 1968. Later, the college was renamed as Sher-e-Bangla Medical College after A.K. Fazlul Haque. This college is affiliated to Dhaka University and is approved by Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council. The MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine & Bachelor of Surgery) degree is recognized by the General Medical Council of England. The principal is the head of the college. The college has its own area of about 33 hectares. There are hostels for students, service training institutes for nurses, nursing institutes and own accommodation for nurses, staff and teachers. Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital is the hospital adjacent to the medical college for teaching students. It has a capacity of 500 beds and internal and external medical services. The head of the hospital is the director. About 30,000 patients receive medical services from the hospital every year. After 5 years of undergraduate medical education from Sher-e-Bangla Medical College, the students get MBBS degree. One year internship is compulsory for registration after graduation. There are postgraduate training programs for FCPS, Masters and Diploma in various branches of medicine. Some post graduate courses have been introduced recently.
